Editing & Proofreading

Whether for a website, a blog, or a book, we all need an editor. I catch what your eyes miss so you can present your ideas to the world with confidence.

Hello, hello! I’m Abby, your friendly neighborhood editor and book formatter with an eye for detail and a love for all things writing. I specialize in line and copy edits, paperback and eBook formatting for publishing through KDP, and proofreading (that last quality-control check before sending your writing out into the world). Thanks for stopping by!

I have more than three years of experience in copyediting, proofreading, and book formatting (for both paperback and digital publication). English is my native language, and one of my greatest hobbies, so you can be sure I’ll treat your manuscript with the care and attention you deserve.

As an independent author and business owner myself, I know how difficult and frustrating it can be to get professional-level edits from a trustworthy editor without breaking the bank. This is why I offer high-quality work, timely turnarounds, and a promise of NO AI USE, for low to average rates.

For more of my take on AI, check out this post:

Why no AI? Because you shouldn’t have to worry about whether your editor will feed your manuscript into a machine, either to train AI databases or to generate sloppy, artificial edits. I treat your writing like my own: with respect toward you and your work.

So, what do you get when you work with me?

My Skills:

– Line/Copyediting

  • Grammar, Punctuation, & Spelling Correction
  • Thorough analysis and (when needed) commentary on the manuscript to ensure coherent editing advice and clear communication with clients.
  • Adherence to the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) or otherwise preferred alternative style guide to ensure professional, cohesive editing.
  • Source verification (not fact-checking), including ensuring links are working properly and quotations are cited accurately.
  • Line edits to improve clarity and flow with careful regard to preserving the author’s voice and intent.

– eBook & Paperback Formatting (more details here)

  • Reflowable eBooks for KDP, EPUB, and Google Books publication.
  • Paperbacks (standard or custom design) for Amazon KDP or Ingramspark publication.

– Proofreading

  • This is not copyediting. Proofreading comes after the manuscript is edited, and ideally after it’s formatted as well. As a proofreader, I check for anything your editors or formatters missed, or that may have been messed up in the process. This includes grammar, spelling, punctuation, margins, font sizes and types, text colors, image sizing and placement, and more. This is quality-control to ensure you publish the best book possible.

– Indie Publishing Support

  • Are you unsure what kind of editing your book needs or what to do next to publish it? Let’s hop on a call, and I’ll walk you through it. I have direct experience with PublishDrive, tech support experience with Amazon and IngramSpark, and I can explain the stages of prepublishing and indie publishing.

Software Experience: Google Workspace (including Google Docs), Microsoft Office (including Microsoft Word), Affinity Publisher (comparable to Adobe InDesign, Atticus, or Reedsy Studio for book formatting), Scrivener, Apple Pages, Kindle Create, Adobe Acrobat, and Canva.

  • Project files can be shared through iCloud, Google Drive, or Dropbox.
  • I work with fiction and nonfiction in most genres; gritty topics are acceptable if approached with tact and respect and no explicit content or glorification of sin (including cheating and lust).

My favorite genres to work with are: Self-Improvement, Business, Psychology, Theology/Religion, Agriculture, How-To, Educational Resources, Historical Fiction, Nonmagical Fantasy, Contemporary Fiction, Dystopian, Action/Adventure, and Children’s Books.

I’m also happy to work with Clean Romance and with Magical Fantasy (if it’s not promoting witchcraft).

My Credentials:

– 3+ years of professional experience in helping indie authors edit and publish their work.

– Student at the College of Media and Publishing (certificate in Proofreading and Editing coming soon)

– Attended more than a dozen professional trainings hosted by EFA and ACES-certified editors (membership fees are the only reason I’m not part of the EFA myself yet; 😅 everything costs $$ these days)

– Self-published author (I’ve been in your shoes!)

Heads Up:

– I don’t work with explicit s3x in writing. At all.

– I don’t work with AI generated writing. At all.

– I don’t work with crass or explicit language in writing. At all.

– I don’t work with writing that mocks my faith or directly contradicts the biblical morals I adhere to. At all.

– I will stop work if one of these boundaries is crossed unexpectedly during a project.

I fully intended to tell you my story, but . . . you can bounce over to my About Me page for that!

If you’ve read this far, and I’ve intrigued you, I look forward to working together!

Blessings,

~ Abigail.
